UPDATE: I have unselected my answer because an icon-less and half-working (see screenshot) version of Photos.app appeared on my system and opened automatically on SD-card insert. This worked and did not cause problems for months, and now Photos is back ?. If you can wait until El Capitan comes out and they fix all the bugs, I highly recommend it. Not worth the days-hours it took to revert back to Yosemite. I don't think I'll even download El Capitan when it is released. I'll wait until they fix everything.
If you're using one of these computers with OS X Mavericks or later,* you can install macOS Catalina. Your Mac also needs at least 4GB of memory and 12.5GB of available storage space, or up to 18.5GB of storage space when upgrading from OS X Yosemite or earlier.

Make a backup
Before installing any upgrade, it’s a good idea to back up your Mac. Time Machine makes it simple, and other backup methods are also available. Learn how to back up your Mac.
Get connected
It takes time to download and install macOS, so make sure that you have a reliable Internet connection. If you're using a Mac notebook computer, plug it into AC power.
Download macOS Catalina
If you're using macOS Mojave, get macOS Catalina via Software Update: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Software Update.

Begin installation
After downloading, the installer opens automatically.
Click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed.
If the installer asks for permission to install a helper tool, enter the administrator name and password that you use to log in to your Mac, then click Add Helper.
Allow installation to complete
Please allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart, show a progress bar, or show a blank screen several times as it installs both macOS and related updates to your Mac firmware.
Stay up to date
After installing macOS Catalina, you will be notified when updates to macOS Catalina are available. You can also use Software Update to check for updates: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Software Update.

If you're using OS X El Capitan v10.11.5 or later and your App Store preferences or Software Update preferences are set to download new updates when available, macOS Catalina will download conveniently in the background, making it even easier to upgrade. A notification will inform you when macOS Catalina is ready to be installed. Click Install to get started, or dismiss the notification to install later. When you're ready to install, just open the file named Install macOS Catalina from your Applications folder.

Just like most of us, you’ve probably jumped on the Sierra bandwagon and upgraded expecting cool features and a boost in performance. But the new macOS has it’s bugs and troubles: some apps and hardware pieces are incompatible with it just yet, and some features are off-putting rather than appealing.

How to remove macOS Sierra and go back to OS X 10.11
IMPORTANT: Do not proceed before you have this guide opened on some other device or printed out! We’ve prepared a full tutorial on how to remove macOS Sierra from your Mac and revert back to El Capitan OS.
Step 1: Keep your files backed up

Otherwise you won’t be able to choose it for installation. No worries, it’s not too hard to create, just stick to the steps below:
Wait for about half an hour till it’s ready. In the end, you will see: Copy Complete. And finally, Done. This means you’re all set.
Step 3: Erase macOS Sierra out of your sight
Once your bootable installer is ready to roll, time to delete macOS Sierra. The following list shows you the easiest way to completely remove macOS Sierra from your Mac, so there is no coming back after you’ve gone all the way. Make sure you’ve kept all precautions, like you have the rest of this page on a separate device and your files are safely backed up or moved to the cloud storage.

When the process of erasing Sierra is complete, you can open the main menu in the upper left corner and simply quit Disk Utility. You won’t need it anymore. Quitting will bring you back to the OS X Utilities selector and our reinstallation journey continues from there.
Step 4: Install OS X El Capitan back on your Mac
